We are moving beyond 3G and 4G to achieve much higher speed of Internet and Telecommunication companies are focusing more on the densely populated area to improve their services. Rural areas are not ignored, but they are somewhere near the bottom of priority list for telcos when it comes to upgrading technology. Even with a good smartphone, browsing sites will be very slow if are loading them on GPRS or EDGE connection.
This may be because of uncompressed website content, high quality images or other scripts included on webpage. Browser has to load each and every resource used in that page before displaying the content on screen.
How to load Sites Faster?
If you are on Chrome browser, you might have observed that Google Search redirects you to a lighter version of web page when it detects a slow speed. This lighter page, or rather say transcoded page is compressed version of webpage served from CDN. They load much faster and can save up to 80% consumption of the data. The redirected URL looks like this
Chrome does it automatically, but if you use different browser, this can also be done manually. Replace the site link with the one you want to visit. The page will now load with the below message.
How it works?
Google compress the various styling codes used in a webpage and combine all the resources in one file. This single compressed file is served from Google’s robust CDN server. This saves the multiple round-trip to the original server to load content. The only problem is, transcoded page doesn’t look attractive and is only useful for reading text content. Sites which requires user login to access contents, can’t be loaded via this method.
