Updating script files or uploading any other media on Web servers are generally done with FTP (File Transfer Protocol). There are several FTP clients (like FileZilla, WinSCP, CyberDuck are available free of cost) which ease the task for you by providing graphical user interface and file synchronization facilities. If you are a webmaster, you might have already used such tools to upload or download files from your Web host servers.
But can you imagine, how easily these task can be performed if you can access your website’s root folder (typically /public_html/yoursite.com
) as a separate drive in your local computer. After that, accessing and transferring of files will be very easy with drag and drop power of Windows explorer. Yes, let me explain.
NetDrive is a freeware tool (is free for non-commercial home use) which allows you to connect to any website with FTP credentials and shows its content as a virtual local hard drive in your system. You can map as many websites as you want for all your owned sites, with a separate drive for each. There is not any limitation.
Once you mount the local drive, you don’t need to run the application every time. You can just drag-and-drop files in Windows Explorer to upload/download them. The application minimizes in system tray and can be accessed from there to manage settings for mapped sites.
